A gallon of regular averaged $4.23 on October 29, up from $3.04 a year earlier. Energy prices overall are up 20.4% in a year. It turns out that starting a war with Iran, which sits on the strait that carries about a fifth of the world's oil, is not a gas-saving strategy.

Tariffs are a tax paid by the importer, and the importer passes it to you. The Yale Budget Lab put the 2025 hit at about $1,700 per household. When the Supreme Court struck down the emergency tariffs in February, the White House answered with a new 15% global tariff.

In fairness
Not every number is bad. Unemployment was 4.2% in September 2026, down from 4.4% a year earlier. Grocery prices rose a modest 1.8% over the past year.
That is real, and we'll say so. It is also hard to enjoy a stable paycheck when gas, insurance and the national credit card are all moving the other way.
